ʻŌhelo (Edible Native Berry) is in the blueberry family and grows in volcanic and alpine zones. Its berries, ranging red to yellow, feed wildlife and are eaten by people. ʻŌhelo stabilizes lava soils and supports birds like the nēnē. It thrives in harsh, acidic conditions and holds cultural significance for ceremonial harvest (Bishop Museum, Native Plants Hawaii, USDA Plants Database).
