The ʻio (Hawaiian Hawk) is a medium-sized, wide-winged raptor endemic to Hawaiʻi Island and the only native hawk remaining in the archipelago. Occurring in both light and dark morphs, it nests in tall ʻōhiʻa lehua trees and feeds opportunistically on birds, rodents, insects, carrion, and even Hawaiian crows. It is territorial and usually solitary, often seen soaring or perched high while scanning for prey. In Native Hawaiian tradition, the ʻio is revered as ʻaumākua and a royal symbol, earning names like iolani and inspiring proverbs about strength and vigilance (DLNR Wildlife Program, FWS, ABC Birds).
