The Alaka'i of KMR
Guides who lead us down the path of personal discovery
Introducing: The Alakaʻi
At Kealakekua Mountain Reserve, we associate characteristics of the Alakaʻi with things that resonate within ourselves and encourage all to follow them down the path of discovery. These plants, animals, and elemental forces offer themselves through presence, inviting us to slow down and pay attention. Each one touches something different within us: courage, curiosity, healing, patience, joy. They are encountered, remembered, and honored through art, stories, and shared journeys. They help us walk an individual path into the forest, the mountain, and within ourselves.
The Alakaʻi have historically been present in our forests, but some of them only dwell in spirit at this time. We envision the day when their land and habitat are restored. Join in the effort by building your awareness of these precious guides or coming to visit and planting a tree in person.
