The ʻelepaio (Small Flycatcher) is a small monarch flycatcher endemic to Hawaiʻi, known for its bold behavior and clear, whistling call that sounds like “elepai-o.” It forages by hopping through understory branches, flicking its tail while catching insects and spiders. ʻElepaio are among the first birds to appear in regenerating forests and are culturally important as guides for canoe builders, who watched their behavior when selecting wood.
