Native Nursery
Kealakekua Forest Nurseries is a specialized facility dedicated to cultivating and propagating native Hawaiian plants. Our nursery plays a crucial role in preserving Hawai‘i’s unique forest, including many endemic species. We have carefully selected a variety of indigenous plants, including trees, shrubs, and ferns. Here you will see various propagation methods such as seed germination and cuttings to ensure a steady supply of healthy plants. With our strong focus on conservation efforts, Kealakekua Forest Nurseries works closely with conservation organizations to restore native habitats and support reforestation projects. We are proud to provide the space for educational centers, tours and volunteer opportunities. Our native species hold cultural importance which is why we emphasize the importance of sustainable and eco-friendly practices.
Seed Collection
Native Hawaiian seed collection, processing, and banking are essential steps in preserving the biodiversity of Hawai‘i’s native plants. Seeds are collected ethically and sustainably to ensure the conservation of native plant populations. Timing of harvesting is critical for successful germination. Our team keeps detailed records of the species, location, and date of seed collection. This information is important for tracking genetic diversity and ensuring the seeds’ authenticity. Seeds are cleaned to remove debris and other impurities. This helps to prevent mold growth and ensure the seeds are viable for storage. Proper drying and storage take place on-site for our ever-growing seed bank.
Reforestation
In 2018, Kealakekua Mountain Reserve initiated stewardship over 9,627-acres located in the district of South Kona, in the ma uka (upland) region. KMR is the largest reforestation effort in Hawai‘i’s history. With a goal of planting 1 million trees by 2030, KMR will have planted 600,000 trees by the end of 2024, well on its way to reaching our goal.
